Microsoft has made mobile productivity easier than ever for businesses with the release of Office Mobile for Android devices. While the Office Mobile app can be downloaded for free, it will only be available to Office 365 users whose subscription includes Office 2013 desktop applications.
Previously limited to Windows Phones and IPhones, Office Mobile’s availability on Android Phones expands the list of viable mobile devices that businesses can consider for their employees business needs. The following table outlines the availability of Office Mobile on Windows Phones, Android Phones, and Apple Mobile devices:
|Windows Phone||Android Phone||iPhone||iPad|
|Office Mobile||Included||Office 365 Subscription Required||Office 365 Subscription Required||Office Web Apps Available|
|Outlook||OWA Available with Office 365 Subscription||OWA Available with Office 365 Subscription||OWA Available with Office 365 Subscription|
|Lync||Office 365 Subscription Required||Office 365 Subscription Required||Office 365 Subscription Required||Office 365 Subscription Required|
|SkyDrive||Available as Apps||Available as Apps||Available as Apps||Available as Apps|
Windows Phones, being a Microsoft product, are still the mobile device that is most optimized for Office and other Microsoft products. The most notable difference between the products available for these mobile devices is Outlook – Windows Phones are the only devices that offer an actual Outlook App. All other devices only have access to OWA, provided your Office 365 subscription included Exchange Online.
That being said, Android and Apple are more and more competitive with regards to business productivity.
With the exception of the iPad, Office Mobile is now available for Windows, Android, and Apple mobile devices.
Lync and SharePoint are all available for these devices. Like Office Mobile, however, they are only available if the respective products are included in your Office 365 subscription, or if your organization is running the 2013 versions of the servers.
SkyDrive, Skype, and Yammer are all available as apps, and can be downloaded by visiting the App Store on your phone.
